Beth IS OK; KIND OF
It took almost a week before I could get up on my own. I was in worse shape than I thought after the fight. Not only did I break a few of my ribs, but I cracked a vertebra too. Thankfully, magi were stronger than narys and could use magic to help heal. If I had been human, I would be paralyzed or dead. I looked over at the bed next to mine where Beth was lying. She hadnât woken up since the fight.
They werenât sure if she ever would. She screamed out in her sleep a few times, but besides that, she appeared to be in a coma. She should be dead, but somehow my magic was keeping her alive. The doctor didnât believe me when I told her what my magic did.
She thought I was delirious and gave me medicine to calm me down. The next time I tried to tell her, she said I probably imagined it, and with all the trauma my body had been through, it wouldnât be unusual to see things that didnât happen. She thought I felt responsible, and my mind was projecting the thought that my magic was the cause of Bethâs coma.
When Ian heard me talking to the doctor about it, he shushed me and told me not to tell anyone else. He didnât want anyone to know what my magic had done. The only person he wanted me to tell was Kellan, but Kellan was so busy that he never came to the infirmary, or he came while I was asleep. I planned on telling him as soon as I could get up and walk to his office.
I tried to get Beth to wake up multiple times a day, but she didnât. I even resorted to trying to use my magic on her, but that didnât work either. The doctor told me to be patient. It could take weeks for her to wake up, if she ever did.
I was leaving the medical room today. Ian would be here soon to get me. I didnât want to leave Beth, but I would visit every day. I got the rest of my stuff together slowly as Ian walked in. He grabbed my things from me, and I stiffly walked to the door.
âBye, Beth. Iâll be back later to see you. Please wake up soon.â I walked out the door and almost bumped into Micah. His bloodshot eyes looked from me to Ian.
âYouâre leaving?â he asked.
âYes. Iâm going to Ianâs. Iâll be back later to check on her.â Micah had come to see Beth every day. Whatever made them argue before the demon fight was forgotten as he sat by her side and told her about his days.
âPlease watch her,â I told him.
âI will.â
I walked away, tears falling as I thought about Beth and how I was the cause of this.
Ian wrapped his arm around me. âYou didnât do this. The demon did.â
âMy magic did this. You didnât see it as it went inside her.
